Dieser Kurs bietet einen historischen Überblick über altmesopotamische Texte und Techniken der Divination. Ziel des Seminars ist es, die Vielfalt und Entwicklung von Praktiken in Zusammenhang mit der Zukunftsschau und der Deutung von Vorzeichen kennenzulernen, die aus dem alten Zweistromland überliefert sind und von der Eingeweideschau bis hin zur Traumdeutung und Astrologie reichen. Im Mittelpunkt stehen schriftliche als auch materielle Quellen, die Einblick in Wissenskomplexe und Tätigkeitsfelder antiker Divinationsexperten gewähren und Auskunft über ihre Klienten, z.B. über ihre Rolle als königliche Berater, gewähren. Vorkenntnisse des Sumerischen/Akkadischen oder der Keilschrift sind nicht erforderlich, um diesen Kurs zu belegen.This course provides a historical overview of ancient Mesopotamian texts and techniques of divination. The aim is to acquaint participants with the variety and development of practices in connection with the arts of prognostication and interpretation of ominous signs attested from this ancient civilization – practices that range from reading animal entrails to the interpretation of dreams and astrology. To this end, we will focus on written as well as material sources that give insight into fields of knowledge and activity of ancient divination experts and throw light on their clients and the institutional settings of their work, e.g. at the royal court.
